Free internet for families is an appealing promise, but the first check is whether the offer still accepts new households. The national School Student Broadband Initiative, or SSBI, is now fully allocated. That does not mean connected families immediately lose service, and it does not mean everyone else has run out of possible help.

Quick answer

Free internet for families is not an open-ended national entitlement. The School Student Broadband Initiative has exhausted its allocation, although connected households can receive the service until 30 June 2028. Families seeking help now should ask their school, provider and community services about current assistance, checking eligibility and any ongoing charges before joining.

Free internet for families: the current SSBI position

The Australian Government’s SSBI page says all available places have been allocated. It also says connected households can receive free service until 30 June 2028. These are different facts: ongoing support for existing participants is not an invitation for new applications.

Unused vouchers expired on 30 June 2025. If an older article tells you to obtain a voucher and sign up, check the official page before spending time following that process. Third-party pages, including older provider information, can remain online after a program’s intake changes.

This guide was checked on 29 September 2026. Use the government page as the starting point for any later change, rather than assuming that a search-result date proves an offer is current.

Already connected? Protect the service you have

Keep the participating provider’s contact details and your account reference somewhere accessible. If the connection fails, report it through that provider. The free-service arrangement does not remove the need for ordinary fault reporting or checking equipment and account details.

Ask before moving home or changing providers. A normal retail switch is not automatically a transfer of program eligibility. Explain that you are an SSBI household and obtain instructions for your circumstances before cancelling the existing connection.

If you receive a bill, ask what it relates to. It might require correction or relate to something outside the program; do not assume either outcome without an explanation. Keep copies of the original arrangement, new messages and any complaint reference.

Be clear about what is supplied

Internet access is only one part of being able to study at home. A child may also need a suitable device, a quiet place to work and help using school systems. The government program includes a modem or router for the connection, but it is not a general free-laptop scheme.

Ask the school separately about device loans or local support. Availability can vary, so describe what is missing instead of asking only whether the school has “free internet”. A loan device might solve a different problem from an unaffordable monthly bill.

If Wi-Fi does not reach the study area, first check placement and the local signal. Our Wi-Fi speed guide explains why a coverage problem is not necessarily a reason to change the internet service.

Not in SSBI? Start with the problem you need solved

These are routes to investigate, not guaranteed benefits. A local service may have limited equipment, appointments or funding. Ask whether a referral is needed and whether there are any charges before sharing documents or committing.

Ask your provider about payment assistance

ACMA’s guidance explains that providers must offer payment-assistance options. If you are struggling to pay, contact the hardship team directly rather than repeatedly trying to stretch an unaffordable bill. You do not need to wait until the service has been disconnected.

Explain the amount you can realistically afford after essentials and whether the difficulty is temporary or ongoing. A short extension might help with a delayed payment; it will not solve a plan that exceeds the household budget every month.

Our guide for when you cannot pay your internet bill sets out the practical steps. Request the arrangement in writing, including what happens to existing arrears and the next bill. Assistance does not automatically mean the debt disappears.

Check targeted offers without assuming they are free

Telstra’s Access for Everyone information describes assistance and targeted services for eligible people. Other support may be available through providers or community partners, but eligibility, referral requirements and inclusions need checking at the time you apply.

Separate a free allowance from an ongoing free household connection. A limited prepaid service can be useful without supplying enough data for several children’s lessons and the rest of the household. Check the expiry date, data allowance and what happens when the included amount runs out.

Likewise, a concession discount is not necessarily the lowest total bill for your needs. Compare the amount payable, device costs and any plan requirements. Do not sign a more expensive contract solely because a discount is attached to it.

Public access can bridge a gap

Ask the local library or community centre what access is available, whether devices can be used on site and whether bookings are required. Some locations provide useful study space, but opening hours and travel can make it an incomplete substitute for home access.

Telstra also identifies free Wi-Fi at enabled payphones. Do not assume every payphone provides Wi-Fi or that reception will be usable at home. A public connection is a temporary access option, not a promise of a private household service.

Use trusted sites, keep devices updated and avoid leaving accounts signed in on shared computers. Follow the school’s instructions for student accounts. If the task involves sensitive personal documents, ask the relevant organisation about a suitable secure way to submit them.

Watch for fees attached to a “free” offer

Be cautious if someone asks for a bank payment to unlock an expired government voucher. Find the official contact details yourself rather than using a link in an unsolicited message. Do not hand over banking passwords or identity documents to an unverified intermediary.

For a legitimate offer, ask about activation, hardware, delivery and the price after the support period. Keep a copy of the terms. A short free trial followed by a paid contract is a different product from an assistance program.

When the household is ready to compare internet plans, start with a sustainable monthly amount and essential usage. Keeping children connected matters more than selecting the largest speed tier or chasing a promotion the budget cannot support.

Where should you go next?

FAQs

Can I still apply for the School Student Broadband Initiative?

The Australian Government says the allocation has been exhausted and there are no new places. Check its current program page for any change. An old referral page or advertisement does not establish that applications remain open.

When does free service end for connected SSBI families?

The current government information says connected eligible households can receive the service until 30 June 2028. Contact the participating provider about your account, any move and arrangements at the end of the program.

Can I use an old SSBI voucher now?

The government says unused vouchers expired on 30 June 2025. Do not give payment information to someone claiming they can reactivate one for a fee. Confirm any new offer directly with the official program or provider.

Does the program include a laptop?

The program provides an internet service and a supplied modem or router, not a general entitlement to a computer or tablet. Ask the school about separate device support and check the conditions of any local scheme.

What if my free-service account receives a bill?

Contact the participating provider and explain that the account is connected under SSBI. Ask for an itemised explanation and a complaint reference if the charge appears wrong. Do not ignore the bill while it is investigated.

Is payment assistance only for concession-card holders?

No. Financial hardship assistance is not limited to people holding a particular card. Contact the provider if you are struggling to pay and ask it to assess your circumstances under its payment-assistance process.
